Shaping the Sustainable Economy

Summary report of the World Business Summit on Climate Change in Copenhagen.

One month after 500 business leaders from some 40 countries met with leading experts, government officials, and NGO representatives at the World Business Summit on Climate Change in Copenhagen, the Copenhagen Climate Council today released the summary report of the Summit, Shaping the Sustainable Economy.

The objectives of the Summit were to mobilize private sector engagement in the development of the future policy framework on climate change, and to provide constructive ideas and practical proposals to support an ambitious global deal on climate change at COP15 in Copenhagen in December 2009.

These objectives were reinforced in opening remarks by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon: "Use your influence as business leaders to bring climate change to the attention of policy makers and the public. Instruct your government affairs teams to lobby vigorously and relentlessly for a successful outcome in Copenhagen in December. Do it now. And do it in every capital where you are represented. Mobilize employees, partners, clients, and customers to take a stand and demand climate action from governments."

On Tuesday, May 26, at the Summit’s closing ceremony, the Council presented recommendations from global business leaders as collected in The Copenhagen Call to Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and UNFCCC Executive Secretary Yvo de Boer to take into the final six months of negotiations leading to COP15.
