Decoding the DNA of trust
In 1996 and 2001 the now defunct magazine Reader’s Digest tested honesty in 33 countries around the world. They put 500 kroner in a wallet, together with the name and address of the wallet’s owner, left it on the street, and awaited the reac tion. In Denmark and Norway the wallet was returned with all the money intact – in every other country, the money disappeared. The magazine therefore felt able to announce that the Danes and Norwegians were the most honest people.
