Europe is about to be united
But unity will only last if Europe is efficient and legitimate
After decades of division between East and West, between peoples and cultures, the dream of a united Europe is about to come true. The unique political structures that have managed to ensure over half a century of peace in Europe are to become the foundation of a United Europe. To make sure that Europe stays united, it is necessary to ensure that its institutions are reformed so that they live up to the expectations of the European public. Both in termes of efficiency and democratic legitimacy. Common institutions are necessary but so is public support for them and the policies they provide. Some complaints levelled at the EU are unfair. But others are relevant, and European politicians would do well to heed them.
