Connecting the Third World
Wireless technologies can help combat poverty
Is lack of internet access the biggest concern for developing countries? Hardly. Yet information and communication technology is definitely part of the solution to some of the Third world’s problems. Both the UNDP and the World Bank believe internet access can play a key role in the fight against poverty by stimulating growth, improving market efficiency and facilitating political involvement for less powerful and wealthy groups. Two new inventions make it possible for remote areas to join the global village. Both bypass traditional infrastructural development and take rural areas directly into the age of wireless communication. Designer Fernando Romero and architect Alejandro Quinto, believe that design has the potential to improve living conditions in the Third world.
